Established in February 2002 by Richard Paradise, the Martha’s Vineyard Film Society, Inc. is a member-funded 501 (c)(3) non-profit arts organization dedicated to screening the best in independent films, movie classics, documentaries, and world cinema for diverse audiences year-round. Although offering an enriched film program is the primary reason we exist, the Society also presents film-related speakers, educational programs and special events to enhance this main mission and increase the public’s appreciation of fine cinema in all its forms. Each September, the Film Society holds the Martha’s Vineyard International Film Festival, a 4 day / night festival of world film and events that brings together film lovers, artists, writers, and those who make movies.

Each year the Summer Institute presents speakers from the front lines of politics, economics, science and the arts. The Speaker Series, held Thursday evenings at the Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center in Vineyard Haven, offers rich opportunities to learn, to be entertained and to engage with the issues of the day. Our featured speakers have included Nobel laureates, Pulitzer Prize-winning authors and journalists, and political leaders who have played important roles on the world stage. In addition to its Speaker Series, the Summer Institute presents a Sunday evening series of provocative and entertaining films, screened on state-of-the-art equipment in the Hebrew Center’s Harriet B. Freedberg Learning Center.
